Students across New South Wales will have the opportunity to discover the rewarding possibilities of a career in rural and regional health at the ‘Rural Health Pathways Showcase’ hosted by RDN Health this Thursday 3 September at the ICC Darling Harbour.
The Showcase follows the success of last year’s inaugural event which attracted more than 700 students in Years 9-12 interested in a career in allied health, medicine, nursing, midwifery and Aboriginal health. The students will get to hear from current industry professionals and take part in practical, hands-on workshops to experience, first-hand, how rewarding a rural health career can be!
The Showcase is free to attend and, with the first of two sessions already booked out, Rural Health Pathways Showcase Manager Ang Kerr says there’s clearly at appetite for high school students wanting to know what a rural or regional career could look like!
“Our first session has booked out and we’re encouraging students and their parents to snap up the last of our free evening session tickets by registering today and heading across to the ICC after school or work to see for themselves how amazing a rural health career can be,” Ang said.
“People want more out of their career; they want to make a real difference and feel they’re giving back to their community and this is just one of many reasons why rural and regional healthcare is becoming increasingly more appealing to students looking at options outside of the city.
“What we’re finding are students not only asking 'how can this career benefit me?' but also, 'how can I make a difference, and be part of, a community?' and a rural health career ticks so many professional and lifestyle boxes!” she said.
Encouraged to ‘see it, try it and do it’, the Showcase offers students a one-stop-shop to participate in hands-on ‘day in the life of a health professional’ activities, talk to universities and health workforce agencies about study pathways and career opportunities, and speak one-on-one with health students, recent graduates and health professionals about their journeys.
“We have more than 30 exhibitors including the Royal Flying Doctor Service South Eastern Section, The University of Notre Dame Australia, University of New South Wales Medicine and Health, Charles Sturt University, Three Rivers Department of Rural Health and the Australian Catholic University - just to name a few!
“RDN Health is also excited to confirm that 2026 NSW Young Australian of the Year Nominee and dental health advocate, Dr Rand Younes, is our keynote speaker for the day session.
“Come along and see for yourself why more and more people are choosing to go rural,” Ang said.
The Rural Health Pathways Showcase is one of a range of initiatives run by RDN Health to support young people into rural health careers, including cadetships and scholarships, immersion experiences, mentoring and networking opportunities.
