A new resource developed by the National Association of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers and Practitioners (NAATSIHWP) is available for download which aims to improve access for Aboriginal Health Workers and Practitioners working in non-ACCHO settings, such as general practice.

NAATSIHWP has developed the guide to support general practices to understand the benefits of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Health Workers and Health Practitioners and promote the effective utilisation of its Workforce members into their models of care.

The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) endorsed guide provides:

  • information on the role, skills and qualifications of our Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Health Workers and Health Practitioners,
  • suggests how general practices can enhance their high-quality clinical care through their provision of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Checks, GP Management Plans, Team Care Arrangements, and follow-up care, and
  • insights on how to nurture and retain our Workforce members in culturally safe general practices.

RDN’s Chief Operating Officer, Mike Edwards said the resource offers a great learning opportunity.

“Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities should be offered holistic culturally responsive care in all health care settings. This guide developed by NAATSIHWP offers practical understanding and sustainable advice,” Mike said.

“I encourage everyone to become familiar with this important resource,” he said.

NAATSIHWP hopes the guide enhances the quality and accessibility of culturally safe health care being offered by general practices and contributes to sustainable and cost-effective ways of improving health and wellbeing outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
