The Western NSW Eye Health Partnership, administered by RDN Health and funded by the Fred Hollows Foundation, was recently invited by the Wellington Aboriginal Corporation Health Service to participate in a wellbeing camp held at the Wellington Caves. As part of the camp, RDN Health’s team, Senior Project Officer, Jessica Dunworth and Program Support Officer, Tori Towney, delivered an eye health yarning session designed to build community knowledge in a culturally safe and engaging way, with a particular focus on diabetic eye disease.
The session created an open and welcoming space to discuss common eye health myths, the importance of regular eye checks, and how early detection especially for conditions such as diabetic retinopathy can significantly improve long-term eye health outcomes. Participants were highly engaged, and many received Western NSW Eye Health Partnership shirts which was an appreciated gesture that helped spark further conversations about eye care across the community.
Following the success of the session, the RDN Health team was invited back to the service to deliver additional upskilling for Aboriginal Health Workers, Aboriginal Health Practitioners, and the Child Health Nurse. This training aims to strengthen confidence in screening children’s eye health and support the planning and delivery of school health checks in 2026.
Jessica said “We love being able to provide our partners and their communities with the most up to date best practice information in eye care screening and patient education. It enables WNSWEHP ACCHS to provide the best care for their people and enable improved Aboriginal eye health outcomes”.
RDN Health is proud to maintain a strong and trusted relationship with the Wellington Aboriginal Corporation Health Service and sincerely thank them for the opportunity to deliver culturally safe upskilling and for their continued partnership and collaboration.
Administered by RDN Health and funded by The Fred Hollows Foundation through its Indigenous Australia Program, the Western NSW Eye Health Partnership brings together Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHSs), Local Health Districts (LHDs), Primary Health Networks (PHNs), and Non-Government Organisations (NGOs).
RDN Health's Outreach activities were administered under the banner of Rural Doctors Network until FY 2025-2026.
